Mark 10:45 reads, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” I have thought often of this verse since so many people focus on their own needs and taking care of themselves first and foremost. I know I fall into this category since I look to what I need to be happy or to get through the day. However, if we live as Jesus did, we do not need to concern ourselves with our own needs but with the needs of others.
In an ideal world, each of us would serve everyone else, and everyone else (in theory) would be serving us. Therefore, our needs would be met even though we would be doing nothing for ourselves. This leaves no reason for selfishness. Of course, we do not live in an ideal world, but I know that I could do better at thinking less of my own needs and instead serve others more. We, as Christians, are called to live differently than the world, and I can’t help but think that this idea of serving others above our own needs might be one of those things that will make us stand apart.
